Stack Glyphs Project Unveils Rare Stacked Characters to Preserve Chinese Cultural Heritage
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Stack Glyphs, a project by designers Te-Yang Tang and Yi-Hsuan Lai, delves into the cultural significance of stacked Chinese characters, aiming to preserve these rare and unique symbols that are gradually being replaced by commonly used characters. The project, which began its conceptual proposal in June 2022, entered design production in October 2022, and held a design joint exhibition in Yunlin, Taiwan in April 2023, has garnered attention for its innovative approach to reviving these cultural artifacts.
Stack Glyphs draws inspiration from the historical significance of stacked characters, which are formed by overlapped glyphs and hold a special place in Chinese culture. The project's main visual poster size is 890mm x 420mm, and it includes a Guide Book Package size of 280mm x 215mm x 40mm, a Guide Book size of 200mm x 100mm x 7mm, and a Pileup size of 25mm x 25 mm x 25mm.
The team's meticulous research involved the sampling of stacked characters excerpted from historical texts, such as the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters, to transform individual characters with specific meanings into icons. This process resulted in the creation of a unique visual representation of stacked characters, offering viewers an immersive experience and a deeper understanding of the ancient methods of character formation.
One of the key highlights of the project is the Stack Glyphs Concept Guide Book, which provides insights into the cultural connotation of superimposed characters. Additionally, the interactive Stack Glyphs seal Pileup allows viewers to create their own pileup characters, further engaging them in the exploration of this cultural heritage.
Stack Glyphs has received prestigious recognition, including the Silver A' Design Award in 2023 for its exceptional creativity and remarkable design. The project has been showcased at various exhibitions, including the Young Designers' Exhibition in Taipei and Vision Get Wild in Kaohsiung, further amplifying its impact and reach.
Yi-Hsuan Lai and Te-Yang Tang, the creative minds behind Stack Glyphs, are committed to promoting and developing the design and application of Chinese characters. Their dedication to preserving and promoting the inheritance and development of Chinese character culture has positioned them as valuable contributors to the field of design.
