Tab: A Fusion of Modernism and Cultural Heritage

Prashant Sutaria, PSA presents Tab, a commercial hospitality project in Durgapur, India, drawing inspiration from the region's historical and culturally rich surroundings. The design integrates modernist architectural expressions with traditional art and architecture, symbolizing the city's development and progress.

The Tab has obtained the prestigious Igbc Platinum Rating and is a result of a Public-Private Partnership with the government of West Bengal, showcasing a blend of modern architecture and local cultural elements.

The architectural solution for Tab involved creating a modernist "Box" and adorning it with art and terracotta works, reflecting the city's industrial and mining heritage. The use of Terracotta on the facade and Gitanjali verses on the lower part of the eastern face further embodies this concept.

The project employed a conventional RCC frame structure with raft foundation, incorporating MS and fibre cement board, and Coreten steel to add a timeless element to the design. High-performance glass was used to optimize daylight and reduce solar gain, ensuring a sustainable and efficient structure.

Tab's unique properties are rooted in its fusion of modern architecture with traditional art and culture, earning it the Igbc Platinum Rating. The project's realization involved overcoming challenges such as accommodating diverse requirements, underground power transmission lines, and stringent building bye-laws.

The design team, including Prakash Mankar Associates, Halder Associates, Durga Singh Deora, and others, contributed to the successful realization of Tab, creating a seamless and functional space for occupants, visitors, and the local community.

Prashant Sutaria, PSA's innovative approach to architectural design has once again resulted in a remarkable and award-winning project, showcasing a harmonious blend of modernism and cultural heritage.
