Designing a Tranquil Home with White Folded Lines

Yu-Fong Chang's White Folded Lines project is a testament to the fusion of aesthetics and functionality in residential design. Situated on a high floor with abundant natural light, the design concept revolves around creating a bright and tranquil atmosphere using white as the primary visual element. The folding of surfaces to create lines not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves practical functions, aiming to bring a unique comfort to a family of four.

The project, completed in November 2022 in Taichung City, Taiwan, encompasses a 205-square-meter apartment on the 21st floor. The interior layout includes three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and three bathrooms. The strategic arrangement of windows in both public and private areas maximizes natural light, creating a bright and open space that enhances the quality of life for the inhabitants.

Utilizing eco-friendly latex paint, oak wood veneer, system cabinets, iron parts, marble, fabric, and oak flooring, the design achieves a harmonious interaction of light and shadow, accentuating the layered and delicate white space. The diverse white textures contribute to the overall delicacy and impression of the space, fostering a serene and natural ambiance.

One of the notable challenges overcome in the design process was managing the abundant sunlight in the master bedroom, which led to the installation of white panels to regulate the incoming light. Additionally, the irregular wall surfaces posed a design challenge, which was addressed through deliberate layout arrangements to ensure continuity and meet the client's storage needs.

White Folded Lines has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award in 2024, underscoring its innovative and practical approach to residential design. With its emphasis on creating a pure and serene atmosphere, this project exemplifies the studio's dedication to thoughtful design thinking and rigorous construction processes, resulting in sophisticated design details and impressive resolutions for clients.
