Designing The Crystal Hall: A Sustainable Approach to Modern Living

Located in Bangalore, India, The Crystal Hall is a five-year project (2014-2019) that embodies the fusion of paleomodern design with avant-garde technology and materials. Inspired by the Earth's climate and the plight of the underprivileged, THOMAS ABRAHAM's vision for The Crystal Hall was to create a building that not only exudes aesthetic appeal but also serves as a tool for recycling and reusing modern materials in sustainable and affordable ways. The project also aimed to provide employment opportunities to India's oppressed communities.

The Crystal Hall stands out for its sustainable approach, reusing materials and employing disadvantaged local talent. The design integrates glass, MS columns, and cast in situ concrete, with a focus on sustainability and zero-waste policies. The use of glass, a material that can be recycled endlessly without loss of quality, contributes to the creation of bioclimatic conditions that combat climate change.

Despite the challenges posed by a tropical climate, the architect overcame them by implementing a double-layered glass system for thermal insulation and incorporating wind power generating towers to provide backup power. The design's emphasis on minimalism, white interiors, and the incorporation of local and climatological aspects reflects a traditional yet modern outlook.

THOMAS ABRAHAM's commitment to environmental consciousness is evident in the near-zero wastage during construction, with all materials being upcycled from excess materials. The Crystal Hall not only provides thermal, visual, and aural insulation but also establishes a strong connection between man and nature, surrounded by orchards.

The Crystal Hall received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that contributes to quality of life improvements and makes the world a better place.
