Pingjiang Times Project: Integrating Form and Function Seamlessly

Jun Ding's Pingjiang Times Project is a stunning urban complex that seamlessly integrates a high-end hotel, retail shopping mall, serviced apartments, and office space. The design strategy was inspired by the movement and flow of water, with building elements expressed as arching legs that combine and overlap, creating a series of concentric circles that tie the project to the significant role that water plays in the region of China. The project is located in the Jiangwan area of Hangzhou, a region historically known for its commercial distribution center and the base of the Qiantang River.

The unique design features a waving façade that creates an organic feel, inspired by water waves and scripted by grasshopper. The building shape and façade system are created by curves that overlap and continue, seamlessly interfacing with the surrounding context along the river. The project's gross area is 80,705 sqm, including a 250-room hotel, a 14,000 sqm commercial center, and a 34,397 sqm service apartment. The site also includes an existing pump station, which presented a creative challenge for the design team.

This mixed-use project aims to elevate the condition inside the site by creating an active commercial street and a rich landscape platform. By proposing a tunnel for the main road between the site and the river, the design creates a separation of pedestrian and vehicles, as well as series green platforms and trails for people to engage with the environment. The design also places building functions in a layered X shape, with the hotel at the front and an internal retail street arranged under the tower to activate the entire site.
