Yining Chen's paper folding lifeboat design, inspired by the origami boat, addresses the issue of limited lifeboats on ships, offering a space-saving and efficient solution. The design has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2022.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yining Chen's Fold and Rescue project introduces an innovative approach to lifeboat design, drawing inspiration from the origami boat's folding structure. The paper folding lifeboat aims to address the challenge of limited lifeboats in a ship's stockpile, offering a space-saving and efficient solution. Composed of nine thickened buoyancy boards and soft links made of reflective materials, the lifeboat's simple structure allows for easy operation, with all functions completed in one step by unfastening three straps.
The open dimensions of the lifeboat measure L4480mm x W2010mm x H1110mm, while in its folded state, it measures L5020mm x W980mm x H930mm. This compact and versatile design provides more possibilities for passengers to survive in the event of a shipwreck, combining the unique origami structure with the feasibility of lifeboats.
Yining Chen, along with Cao Weizhi and Zhang Xinyu, members of the graduate student team at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, conducted research and design for this innovative lifeboat. Their dedication to product innovation design and the principle of being people-oriented has led to the development of a life-saving solution that meets all the functional needs of ordinary lifeboats.
