Introducing PackZero: a sustainable solution for online retail packaging, designed by Yanhui Ban, Ruoyi An, and Shijie Luan
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yanhui Ban, Ruoyi An, and Shijie Luan have designed PackZero, a revolutionary system that aims to transform the resource-depleting online retail distribution model. The inspiration for PackZero came from the insight that shipping boxes primarily provide protection and are often overlooked in terms of sustainability. The team's solution involves creating a circular delivery network that combines inflatable reusable packaging with a hybrid pickup and delivery experience. This system will build central hubs at easily accessible locations, reducing overall product miles and environmental impact.
The PackZero system features reusable packages made of durable biodegradable materials, potentially usable up to 100 times. The packages come in three sizes and are designed to automatically deflate upon opening, allowing for easy return to designated bins in public spaces, subway stations, campuses, and more. The returning bins utilize a simple pedal-operated mechanism to compress and transport the packages efficiently.
The project, which began in September 2019 in Pasadena, California, was completed in December of the same year. The team conducted extensive research, including competitive analysis, trend studies, user interviews, and prototype testing to address challenges related to material durability and eco-friendliness. Their efforts culminated in the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing PackZero's innovative and sustainable approach to online retail packaging.
Team PackZero, comprised of Yanhui Ban, Ruoyi An, and Shijie Luan, is based in Rosemead, California. Their strong belief in the power of design to address environmental challenges led them to develop PackZero, a product system with the potential to make a profound impact on sustainability in online retail distribution.
