Clay Holden Architects introduces "Salon Xia," a modern and innovative salon design located in downtown Pasadena, California. The design, completed in May 2018, offers a unique approach to organizing a modern salon while subtly referencing its Southern Californian and urban context.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Clay Holden Architects has unveiled "Salon Xia," a groundbreaking salon design located in downtown Pasadena, California. Inspired by the local environment, the design incorporates colors, shapes, and artwork that abstract the surrounding sea, vegetation, and iconic Pasadena architecture. The main space remains naturally bright and open, revealing the urban nature of the raw concrete building shell.
The innovative approach to organizing a modern salon is evident in the design, with two freestanding sculptural hexagonal towers floating within the space to create open, uniquely oriented, and equal stations for each of the twelve stylists. This radial organization is spatially very efficient, providing more room for each stylist, circulation, and more privacy for the clients.
Hexagonal shapes repeat in plan and rotate through the space in various forms, including the reception desk, waiting bench, dressing room, ceilings, and lights. The central dressing room becomes a focal point in richly colored velvet for privacy and sound absorption and can be fully opened for more space during events.
The project, designed in Los Angeles, California starting in August 2017, was completed in May 2018. The design creates a tenant improvement and re-branding strategy for an established beauty salon in downtown Pasadena, offering a fresh and innovative approach to organizing a modern salon.
