Jung-Mei Wou's Aeon is a stainless steel sculpture installation that delves into the essence of symbiotic phenomena. The concept is inspired by Zhuangzi's philosophy, "A Happy Excursion", and seeks to explore the interdependence of seemingly opposing forces. The abstract sculpture refracts light and shadow, creating an illusion of the personal subconscious while projecting a seemingly real space.
This unique work reflects the contrast between large and small through abstract shapes, light, and shadow. The sculpture, made of forged stainless steel, utilizes a grid-shaped stainless steel skeleton as the structure, with the surface crafted from thin plate split forging, knocking, and welding to achieve a lightweight yet visually impactful form.
Measuring 1030mmx910mmx1120mm, Aeon symbolizes the relationship of duality and interdependence, combining the large fish whale and fish eggs in the sea. The sculpture was exhibited at the Taipei World Trade Center Art Fair in April 2016 after a year-long project from concept model to finished work.
The design process posed challenges in presenting the lightness of the sculpture with a double curved surface for the support points. Six models were created to test the circular hole's impact on the sculpture's center of gravity, ensuring an exquisite balance of structural mechanics.
Jung-Mei Wou, based in Taipei, Taiwan, is an award-winning artist known for her unique creative expression and passion for art and design. Aeon was honored with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that contributes to quality of life improvements.
