Jung-Mei Wou's "Soar" sculpture installation, a symbol of freedom, captures the sensory experience of a healing soul Garden of Eden, challenging the balance of structural mechanics and evoking the beauty of flight.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jung-Mei Wou's "Soar" is a captivating sculpture installation that attempts to evoke the code of freedom in the human spirit by depicting the instantaneous soaring of a bird, the sense of speed in flight, and the constant change. This unique piece challenges the lightness and graceful curvature of metal sculpture, recreating the dynamic form of flying birds and the unpredictable changes from different perspectives.
The sculpture, made of forged stainless steel, features a mirror-polished surface that reflects the surrounding sky, creating a floating and light visual effect. Its perfectly curved surface lines reshape the momentum and stability of flight, revealing the mutual combination of aesthetic feeling and structural mechanics.
The large-scale sculpture, finished in 2022, was preceded by a prototype exhibited at the Taipei World Trade Center Art Fair in April 2016. The wind load influenced the shape of the sculpture and the surface optimization method, with aerodynamic shape optimization helping achieve the optimum design while reducing the wind load.
One of the key challenges in creating "Soar" was presenting a state of floating lightness, achieved through a shifted center of gravity and a particular balance that challenges the balance of structural mechanics. The sculpture presents a flying dynamic form, capturing the sensory experience of the journey into the garden, symbolizing freedom in the human soul.
Jung-Mei Wou, based in Taipei, Taiwan, is a passionate artist and designer who founded her atelier in 2011. Her unique creative expression with succinct and graceful curves has won her several international awards in sculpture and jewelry design. "Soar" was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature that meets professional and industrial requirements.
