The Grid Architects Unveils "Rope" - A Sustainable Terrace Cafe Design

The design team at The Grid Architects drew inspiration from the traditional Indian charpoy and the need for quick aesthetic solutions within strict time and budget constraints. The use of jute rope as a primary material allows for sustainable and eco-friendly space-modulating partitions and canopies, defining individual seating islands.

The liberal usage of jute rope not only contributes to the cafe's eco-friendliness but also offers unique properties such as thermal insulation, easy handling, and cost-effectiveness. The south-west facade features recycled corrugated sheets and strategically installed planks to channelize wind currents, while the flooring utilizes recycled babool wood sourced from the forest department.

The terrace cafe's design incorporates an enclosed space with air conditioning, providing a refuge from harsh weather conditions, and features a pink spiral staircase leading to an upper terrace designated as a smoking zone and private area for special celebrations.

The project faced challenges in creating the weaved canopy with jute rope, leading to innovative solutions that resulted in dramatic shapes and shadows. The overall design aims to create a warm and welcoming environment, connecting people through sustainable and traditional architecture.

"Rope" has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category, highlighting its practical and innovative approach that meets professional and industrial requirements.
