Architectural Transformation of Row Houses in Phnom Penh

cocoon architecture ltd. has successfully completed the Soleil 88 Phnom Penh project, a groundbreaking residential development that redefines traditional row houses in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The project, completed in 2019, introduces a unique architectural intervention that transforms an unfinished mega complex of row houses into distinguishable individual homes.

The development comprises 88 row houses, with two show flats constructed in the first stage. The intervention focuses on the 1.5m façade zone, where staggered balconies are inserted at different levels of individual row houses, forming buffer zones in-between them. This innovative approach encourages the play of light and shadow, effectively altering the anonymous complex into distinguishable individual houses.

By introducing negative spaces between the row houses, the design expresses the individuality of each residence while respecting the local culture and accommodating the sub-tropical climate. The balconies, covered roof garden, and other original features of traditional row houses are retained, with enhancements introduced to fit modern life. The recessed balconies and tilted main windows prevent direct views from the street and overlooking of facing houses, ensuring privacy and comfort for the residents.

The project's design is enriched by solid and void, creating a vivid form of elevation and making each row house unique. This innovative approach has overcome creative, technical, and research challenges, elevating the standard of living for the younger generation in Phnom Penh and meeting their desire for individuality and privacy in city life.
