Guowei Zhang's innovative Dongguan Garage Building project, a fusion of meandering water bodies and urban core location, redefines parking solutions with an architectural urban sculpture.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Guowei Zhang's Dongguan Garage Building project is a revolutionary approach to parking solutions, integrating the unique meandering water bodies of Dongguan with the core location of the site. The design uses the traffic circulation unique to the garage as a tractive force to create a continuously looping building, refining the volume according to the siteâs geometry to achieve a pure architectural form. The project, located at the intersection of Shizhu Road and Tiyu Road, Guangcheng District, is set to be completed in 2022.
The design team has gone through multiple rounds of discussion and demonstration with the owner to designate retail spaces from B1 to P2 and on the rooftop. The project aims to resolve local traffic issues, improve the experience for urban commuters, and create a new urban 'place' for people to gather and stay. The garage uses a highly expressive and space-saving spiral ramp structure to greatly improve parking efficiency, providing 25% more usable parking spots. Pedestrian and vehicle circulations are separated on the plan, enabling flexible responses to emergencies in the garage. An atrium at the center of the circulation enriches the visual experience and improves natural ventilation.
The design team continues to learn from the flexibility of flowing water, using a linear design language that forms the everchanging beauty of the facade. The GRC material for the white ribbons not only reflects the unique textures of the flowing curves but also merges with the vast land as one. The project has been awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding expertise and innovation.
