Body Voice: Wearable Instrument by Lihsing Wang

Lihsing Wang's Body Voice is a groundbreaking wearable instrument that empowers dancers to create music through their movements, subverting the conventional relationship between music and dance. The project began in Taiwan in November 2017 and was completed in June 2018, marking a significant leap in the art of dance.

The Body Voice comprises wireless Bluetooth clips equipped with gyro and acceleration sensors that capture dancers' movements and transmit them to a mobile phone via Bluetooth 3.0. These movements are then analyzed and converted into music using a dedicated app, which can be played through a Bluetooth speaker. This innovative technology opens up new possibilities for free creations in the art of dance.

With a focus on hands as the primary means of expressing body emotion, the initial prototype involved gloves with sensors to capture hand gestures. However, after receiving feedback from dancers, Wang pivoted to using motion-detecting clips, which received rave reviews. The result is a wearable instrument that redefines the relationship between music and dance, allowing dancers to create music through their movements.

Lihsing Wang, a versatile artist, fashion, and product designer based in NYC, has received recognition through 14 prestigious international awards, including the A' Design Award, International Design Awards (IDA), European Product Design Awards, NYCxDESIGN Awards, iF Design Award, and Red Dot Award. His exceptional creative abilities were prominently displayed in the esteemed 2021, 2022, and 2023 NYC fashion shows and runways. In addition to his design successes, Wang is the visionary founder of Utopia, an exceptional event platform fostering cultural exchange and collaboration in the creative industry.
