Renowned architect Li-Yu Cheng's "Side Face" project, a residential interior design, has been awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design in 2021. The innovative design, aimed at addressing the needs of an aging society, offers a unique living space concept and functional features for senior citizens.
Conceived as a cuboid diagonally cut into two halves, "Side Face" presents a unique living space where public areas and private rooms are probed into lateral perspectives. The design caters to the needs of senior citizens, offering open-plan, roomy passages, and accessible features to accommodate habitable conditions, while providing a better lifestyle encompassing multiple functions.
To realize the design, interior materials such as marbles, wood veneers, natural stone skins, and hairline stainless steel trims were used to subtly delineate spatial expression with a tint of oriental touch. The 213 square meter construction area in Taipei city was transformed into a space that not only preserves privacy but also allows for flexible movement and dynamic living flows.
Li-Yu Cheng, along with Yu-Chen Chen, meticulously planned the accessible design, ensuring wide passages in every corner without any unused space. The design allows for different sizes of family or friend gatherings, enriching the retirement life of the residents.
Li-Yu Cheng, the architect behind "Side Face," is a lecturer of Interior Design Department in Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan, and the founder of StudioX4. The studio is dedicated to urban languages and interdisciplinary studies toward both exterior and interior spatial design, with a focus on modernist architectures and contemporary spatial design.
