Breaking Boundaries with "Hollow Out" Design

SONG LIU and LEI WANG's Full Ballpoint Pen, winner of the Silver A' Design Award, seamlessly combines industrial beauty and functionality. The pen, a part of the "Hollow Out" series, features a slender hollow milled on the body, showcasing the metal refill inside. This design breaks the boundary between inside and outside, offering users a fresh experience by integrating the inner part supporting the writing function with the hand-holding part through the hollow section.

The aerospace alloy material and meticulous manufacturing processes, including CNC milling, surface blasting, and oxidation, result in a complete and visually striking industrial design. Weighing only 19 grams, the pen's opening shuttle shape divides the interaction area between the finger and the pen body, ensuring a comfortable grip and preventing rolling when laid flat. The refill's color and inner movement are intuitively visible, adding to the overall user experience.

Beginning in April 2017 and concluding in August 2017 in Beijing, the design project involved extensive research to explore the relationship between inside and outside, emphasizing the significance of handwriting in the digital age. The designers also conducted sensory and human-factor testing to evaluate the product's shape and mechanism, overcoming the challenge of balancing ergonomic factors and design concepts.

The Full Ballpoint Pen is a testament to SONG LIU and LEI WANG's commitment to innovative and exceptional design, earning recognition in the A' Art and Stationery Supplies Design Award for its outstanding expertise and innovation.
