FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
West-line studio's Shui Cultural Center, designed by Haobo Wei and Jingsong Xie, stands as a gateway to Sandu County, the heart of the Shui ethnic minority in Southern Guizhou Province. Inspired by the Shui minority sacrificial rites, the architecture pays homage to the local culture and traditional architecture, combining all the functions of a tourist-cultural center within its iconic and distinct shape.
The building, with an area surface of 13,808.04 sqm and a building surface of 4,223.59 sqm, features a unique design realized through fair-faced concrete, copper steel plates, and colorful transparent glass. The structure, reaching a maximum height of 23m, is a contemporary public space that guides visitors into the world of Shui's rituals and ceremonies.
Constructed from June 2016 to November 2017, the Cultural Center is a result of extensive research on regional connection, public life, ritual atmosphere, lighting atmosphere, and construction. The main challenge was to transform the traditional elements of the Shui minority's culture into a contemporary public space, successfully creating an intimate and dramatic atmosphere within the interiors.
