Illusory: Aromatherapy Diffuser Redefining Sustainability

Jingyi Miao introduces Illusory, an innovative aromatherapy diffuser that revolutionizes sustainable design by integrating packaging with the product. The design draws inspiration from the softness and porosity of sponges, utilizing their cushioning and fragrance-emitting properties to create a unique and sustainable diffuser experience.

The Illusory diffuser is crafted from BONDED FOAM, a recycled sponge material, offering an environmentally friendly and high-strength solution. The design not only reduces material waste but also enhances the fragrance's longevity and charm through the sponge's porous nature.

With a focus on sustainability, Illusory presents a translucent frosting design, allowing users to glimpse the inner product, resembling a perfume bottle, and showcasing the beauty and innovation of the design.

During transportation, the sponge diffuser serves as a protective packaging lining for the fragrance bottle. Upon receiving the product, users can easily remove the packaging lining to access the sponge diffuser. By spraying aromatherapy liquids onto the diffuser, the porous nature of the sponge ensures even adhesion, leading to a continuous and long-lasting fragrance emission.

The project commenced in July 2022 and concluded in April 2023 in Guangzhou, China, with an exhibition at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in June 2023. The design process involved extensive research on packaging waste behavior, leading to the development of a sustainable approach that integrates packaging with the product.

Illusory has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2024, acknowledging its outstanding and innovative contribution to sustainable design and aromatherapy experiences.
