Engawa

TSAI DUNG LIN introduces "Engawa," a revolutionary residential house design that draws inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture. The project, awarded Bronze in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024, redefines family interactions through the innovative incorporation of engawa, a distinctive feature that blurs boundaries while delineating spatial functions.

An engawa is a type of flooring in traditional Japanese architecture that connects the interior with the exterior, and blurs the boundary yet defines spatial functions. The design features middle rooms that seamlessly connect the living room, dining area, and study without spatial interference, providing ample family storage space. The innovative approach transforms the home into a place for entertaining children with interesting and diverse visuals and user experiences.

The project, covering an area of 106 square meters, is set to commence in Taipei in October 2022 and be completed in January 2023. The design incorporates layered structures to simplify the entire space into standalone yet interconnected rooms, offering a new way for family interactions. The structural elements inspired by engawa provide sufficient family storage space with surface planes for diverse usage, emphasizing functionality and user experience.

TSAI DUNG LIN, based in Taipei City, Taiwan (China), is known for removing unnecessary decoration and pursuing the essence of space. The studio emphasizes the design concept in accordance with the nature of the space and the needs of the owner, combining to create a story and interesting space. The innovative "Engawa" design is a testament to the studio's commitment to reintegration of people and space, interweaving each other's new vitality.
