Sung Hsing Lee's "Light and Shadow" project is a testament to the seamless integration of American style with natural light and ventilation. The two-story residential design, completed in August 2019 in Taichung City, Taiwan, spans approximately 562 square meters. The design embraces an open space concept, utilizing wood veneer, tiles, stone finish, and wood flooring to create a warm and casual ambiance.
The project's layout configuration, color expression, and styling language are meticulously tailored to the clients' request for a warm and casual American style. The strategic placement of windows in every corner allows for breathtaking views and a seamless connection between the indoor living areas and the surrounding grassland.
One of the design's unique features is the use of multiple arch-doors to define the main functions of each area, creating a progressive level akin to a courtyard. This innovative approach results in a focusing effect, allowing the space to follow the interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the overall ambiance.
The project's completion posed several challenges, particularly in the selection and use of materials. The designer successfully navigated the need for super-wear-resistant flooring in a super-humid climate, ensuring both functionality and visual appeal while accounting for thermal expansion and contraction.
Recognizing the exceptional design and execution, the "Light and Shadow" project was honored with the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, a testament to its practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
