Venus, a luxury homeware set designed by Tiger ChongSheng Guo, captures the beauty of celestial forms through 3D printing, celebrating the purity of materials and minimizing waste. The project started in July 2017 and finished in January 2018, with reproductions made using local industry in early 2020.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tiger ChongSheng Guo's Venus is a luxury homeware set that encapsulates the symbiosis between two forms, celebrating the unique qualities of 3D printed geometries. Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, Venus utilizes additive manufacturing, specifically 3D printing, to capture the serendipitous qualities of the 3D filament with minimal waste.
The design was 3D printed in a ceramic and polymer mix, then fired in a kiln to finish the ceramic. The wood base was 3D printed in a PLA and wood mix, sanded, and stained. Venus measures 137 x 154 x 109, with the cup alone at 112 x 125 x 101 and the base alone at 137 x 154 x 35.
The project began with rapid concept ideation, moving from abstract form ideation to digital design. Ergonomics and anthropometric studies were undertaken to refine form, surface, and scale. The most challenging aspect was the requirement for simplicity and elegance, using no more than two independent forms and exploring new materials through 3D printing.
Tiger ChongSheng Guo, a China-born, New Zealand-based designer, aims to bring additive manufacturing and cutting-edge design practices to the industry. Educated at Victoria University of Wellington, Tiger's work has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2020, acknowledging the practical and innovative nature of Venus.
