Vegetable: A Unique Dough Toolset Inspired by Fruits and Vegetables

Yi Teng Shih introduces "Vegetable," a dough toolset designed to revolutionize the way children interact with dough. Inspired by the ergonomic needs of children, this toolset takes its cues from the shapes of commonly consumed fruits and vegetables, offering a fresh and engaging approach to dough play.

Through innovative toolset shapes, "Vegetable" encourages children to explore and create diverse dough shapes while considering their ergonomic comfort. The eggplant rolling pin's thoughtful design provides better support for flattening dough, while the carrot cutter's rounded shape makes it easier for kids to handle and cut dough. Additionally, the mushroom extruder offers a captivating way for kids to observe the dough extrusion process.

Constructed using plastic material and produced through injection molding, "Vegetable" boasts a package size of 35cm x 23cm x 21cm, making it a comprehensive and sustainable toy for hands-on skill development.

Yi Teng Shih, along with the PolyU Design team and Ningbo MiroKids Toys Co., Ltd., meticulously crafted "Vegetable" to provide children with cutting, pressing, and squeezing actions to help them shape their dough creations. By combining children's ergonomic needs with the shapes of different vegetables, this toolset aims to enhance children's creativity, concentration, cognition, logic, aesthetics, and expression skills.

During the January 2019 to January 2021 duration, the design project was based in Hong Kong and Ningbo, with a focus on developing a series of designs that cultivate children's hands-on abilities. The team overcame challenges related to identifying the right ergonomic size to fit the hand size of most children, conducting extensive testing to ensure optimal comfort and usability.

Yi Teng Shih's "Vegetable" has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2021. This accolade celebrates the innovative and resourceful nature of the design, acknowledging its contribution to enhancing quality of life and making the world a better place.
