Black House: Nature-Inspired Sustainable Residential Project

The Black House, part of the No Footprint House series, embodies a symbiotic relationship between nature and the built environment. It features operable facade elements that open the building interiors towards their natural surroundings, responding to the unique biodiversity and micro-climates of Costa Rica.

The three-level steel structure with wooden finishes utilizes FSC certified and sustainably grown wood, promoting a sustainable and regenerative approach to construction. The project offers a range of typologies, from tiny houses to suburban villas, with building costs varying based on sizes, materials, and client preferences.

Industrial and prefabricated building techniques optimize production efficiency, incorporating locally sourced and renewable materials such as bamboo and hempcrete. The project, initiated in 2018, aims to create model homes for different climatic variations, providing sustainable and regenerative building solutions to coexist with the local habitat.

Costa Rica's unique level of biodiversity and micro-climates served as the foundation for the Black House, driving innovation through the development and incorporation of renewable and locally sourced materials. The project was first introduced to the public at the 2019 international conference for climate change by the United Nations, showcasing its potential for decarbonized housing and sector-wide decarbonization in Costa Rica.

The Black House represents a pioneering approach to sustainable construction, blending nature-inspired design with cutting-edge technology to create a model for regenerative development in the built environment.
