Mengzhen Xu's Traditional Chinese Medicine Teabag

Designer Mengzhen Xu introduces "Fold," a revolutionary teabag design aimed at enhancing the extraction efficiency of traditional Chinese medicine. The innovative origami-inspired structure not only increases the "effective drug concentration" but also reduces packaging volume by 60%, aligning with sustainable design principles. The teabag is made from 100% biodegradable and renewable paper, further emphasizing its eco-friendly nature.

Utilizing a flat folding structure, "Fold" unfolds layer by layer into a barrel-like shape when in contact with hot water, ensuring optimal extraction efficiency. The reduction in transportation space by 60% contributes to lower production costs and carbon emissions during transportation, making it an environmentally conscious choice.

The product dimensions, 95 mm x 95 mm x 16 mm, and the outer packaging, 100 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm, are carefully selected to prioritize user experience and sustainability. The outer packaging is crafted from lightweight, sustainable, and biodegradable paper, printed with environmentally friendly ink to minimize environmental impact.

During the brewing process, the medicine package unfolds layer by layer from a flat folded shape, forming a barrel-like structure, ready to be consumed in 2-5 minutes. The project, initiated in July 2022 and completed in April 2023 in Guangzhou, China, involved extensive research, including academic paper reviews and user interviews, to ensure the teabag's alignment with daily habits and preferences.

The "Fold" teabag has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2024, underscoring its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and sustainable innovation. The copyrights for the design belong to Jingyi Miao, 2023.
