Designing a Seafood Haven: Bay Arce

MAYUMI EHARA's Bay Arce is a seafood restaurant located in the Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal Building, offering a breathtaking view of the sea. The design incorporates a step floor format, ensuring a picturesque view for every guest, including those in wheelchairs. The unique structure of the audience seats gradually unfolds as visitors enter the restaurant, resembling the anticipation of a sea voyage.

The entire audience seating area is crafted to resemble a large ship, with fine wood detailing expressing the artistry of natural wood colors. The wooden panels on the ceiling beautifully depict waves, creating an immersive maritime ambiance.

The restaurant's design utilizes Noto Hiba wood from Ishikawa Prefecture, known for its deodorizing and insect-repellent properties. The wave-shaped ceiling, representing the sea's waves, is meticulously crafted from wood, creating a ship-like appearance. The restaurant spans approximately 230 square meters and was conceptualized in February 2019, opening its doors in April 2020.

Bay Arce offers a fresh seafood dining experience with a view of the sea, catering to various occasions such as gatherings with friends, family, and special celebrations. The design process involved overcoming technical challenges, such as bending wood to depict the waves on the ceiling, resulting in a visually stunning and functional space.

MAYUMI EHARA, based in Tokyo, Japan, is renowned for her exceptional interior design work, with a focus on creating captivating spaces that align with her clients' visions. Her diverse portfolio includes designing stores for apparel brands and crafting unique café experiences. In 2021, Bay Arce received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its innovative and practical design approach.
