Haocailou Restaurant Design by SIG Design

SIG Design introduces Haocailou, a 542sqm restaurant project located in Fengshengli, Shanghai, which seamlessly blends traditional Shunde culture with modern innovation. Inspired by a visit to the local folk museum of Shunde and inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, the project aims to make modern works with traditional handicrafts.

The project adopted images of traditional culture and intangible cultural heritage in a modern way, incorporating traditional daliang fish lanterns, Shunde phoenix Crown, phoenix boat, bridal Sedan chair, Guan Gong Lion, and Gambiered Canton Gauze to highlight Shunde culture. The design also features innovations in construction technology, dining experience, and floor plan.

Haocailou's unique properties lie in its ability to highlight Shunde culture and attract young people. The project applied a large number of lanterns, traditional colors, and multi-layer materials to form a lively atmosphere and present Shunde culture. The theme of the phoenix was used to echo Haocai, expressing happiness.

The project's realization involved desktop research, on-site market research about Cantonese and Shunde cuisine, and on-site visits to learn about Shunde culture. The team included a creative director, interior designers, graphic/illustration designers, rendering experts, and project management personnel.

The restaurant's design presents various interaction points, such as the magnificent and concise yellow-stained stairs resembling a dragon hovering up, the transformation of traditional Shunde cuisine into a bar dining experience, and private rooms inspired by Shunde fish lanterns.

Haocailou's design project began in July 2021 and was completed in December 2021. The team conducted extensive research on Cantonese and Shunde cuisine, Shunde culture, and the location of Fengshengli in Shanghai, which influenced the innovative and fashionable design of the restaurant.

Haocailou overcame the challenge of highlighting the cultural characteristics of Shunde, distinguishing it from daily Cantonese culture, and attracting the attention of young people. The project successfully achieved this through its innovative design elements and cultural references.
