Architectural Marvel: The North Teaching Cluster

The North Teaching Cluster of Zjuic, designed by U A D, is a striking addition to the International Campus of Zhejiang University. Spanning 53,000 square meters, this cluster comprises 8 buildings, including an auditorium, lecture halls, public teaching building, business school, administration building, and multi-functional hall. Situated at the central axis of the campus, it serves as a public hub, seamlessly integrating various functions within the campus.

The design of the North Teaching Cluster is anchored in the concept of "1 axis, 2 circles, 3 centers, and 4 zones," with the round auditorium at its core. The interconnected buildings are linked through floating platforms and corridors, embodying the core concept of "Round Auditorium, Open Courtyards & Alleys." This design approach enhances the guidance, fluidity, openness, and publicity of the building complex, promoting interaction and integration among different functional areas on the campus.

Notably, the design seamlessly blends traditional Chinese elements with modern architectural features, such as glass curtain walls, steel-structured corridors, and metal roofs. The red-brick facades are adorned with Chinese-style brick patterns, wooden semi-pavilion stages, and glass arch printings, creating a harmonious fusion of classic and contemporary, Eastern and Western architectural styles.

One of the key challenges overcome in the design process was to create a campus public center that embodies the university's design concept while fostering connectivity and openness. The result is a stunning architectural complex that pays homage to the campus's heritage while embracing modernity and functionality.
