At the 2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taichung, "Fruitfulness" emerged as a poetic expression of the mountain settlement's connection to the land and nature. Crafted from willow fir, this reversible installation symbolizes a harmonious cycle between the settlement, the land, and hydrology, reflecting the wisdom of farming and the beauty of bountiful harvests. The collaboration between architects, curators, and artists from Taiwan and Japan resulted in a unique landscape aesthetic, showcasing the potential of natural ecological materials.
The 25-square meter installation features a field-shaped stacked frame made of solid willow cedar jambs, adorned with seven light and fruit lamp clusters crafted from thinly sliced and bent willow cedar. The sustainable approach is evident in the use of tongue and groove wooden structure with snap-on hardware, allowing for complete disassembly without the use of nails. The reflection of the water tray beneath the installation mirrors the abundance of the fields, creating a captivating visual experience.
Despite the technical and creative challenges, the design team overcame structural complexities using digital design tools and traditional wood construction techniques. The result is a visually stunning and structurally sound installation that embodies the essence of sustainable art and design.
