Air Shield: Multifunctional Workstation

As the world adapts to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Jung Joo Sohn introduces Air Shield, a groundbreaking multifunctional workstation designed to address the need for workplace safety without compromising connectivity. This innovative solution aims to protect desk occupants by purifying the air and blocking pathogen transmission with its dual fan and filter system, all while providing acoustic privacy in open office systems.

The Air Shield housing, made of extruded aluminum with perforations and molded plastic end caps, houses a dual-fan system that filters and circulates air. The outer fan blades are made of HEPA filters with customized Germ Defense material, while the inner fan is made from plastic. The system is easily installed and removed with two screw clamps and features a simple push-button operation to power on/off the fan. Motion sensors detect the presence of individuals, activating the air-flow accordingly.

Measuring 57” wide, 31.10” deep, and 28.50” tall, Air Shield can be attached to any work surface over 57” wide. It is a testament to Sohn's dedication to providing a solution that not only addresses the immediate challenges posed by the pandemic but also offers sustainable benefits for the future of workspace design.

Jung Joo Sohn, an assistant professor of industrial and interaction design at Purdue University, has been recognized for his exceptional work, with Air Shield receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Office Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade underscores the innovative and resourceful nature of the design, showcasing its significant contribution to improving the quality of life in work environments.
