Yoshiaki Tanaka's Coexisting With Nature Dental Clinic

Yoshiaki Tanaka's TSC Architects designed a dental clinic in Toyohashi, Japan, that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment. The clinic, completed in April 2022, utilizes the existing land's characteristics, such as the height difference and vegetation, to create a space where patients can relax and experience nature during their visits. By leaving the trees intact and connecting the clinic's functions with open corridors and multiple roofs, the design aims to provide a healing experience for patients.

The clinic, covering a site dimension of 763.72 sqm, features a total floor space of 262.97 sqm and a built area of 270.70 sqm. The unique architectural approach not only creates a soothing atmosphere but also contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide generated during land development and construction costs.

One of the main challenges faced during the construction was preserving the existing trees. TSC Architects worked with landscaping experts to determine which trees could be kept and even transplanted some. Additionally, the design team structurally devised the roof to create a sense of unity, wrapping the space in a large roof without the need for pillars in the examination room, the largest building area.

Tanaka's vision for the clinic was to challenge the traditional image of dental clinics, making them less intimidating and more inviting. By creating a space that allows patients to experience nature and feel at ease, the clinic aims to not only provide medical care but also promote overall well-being.

Yoshiaki Tanaka's Coexisting With Nature Dental Clinic was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2023 for its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence in blending architecture with nature.
