Huo Kai Transforms Yongle Palace Mural into Cartoon Illustrations
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Huo Kai, a designer from Shenyang, China, has taken inspiration from the ancient frescoes of Yongle Palace in Shanxi Province, China, to create a series of captivating cartoon illustrations. The project, which commenced in March 2019 and concluded in September 2019, aimed to protect and inherit the preserved murals of Yongle Palace by transforming them into modern, relatable characters.
The frescoes of Yongle Palace, originally from the Yuan Dynasty, have been meticulously recreated as cartoon figures using advanced computer technology. These illustrations, including characters such as "Empress Mother," "Emperor Huang Tian," "Queen Mother of the West," and "Maid," are designed to appeal to contemporary audiences while preserving the essence of the ancient mural art.
Using vector graphic design software Adobe Illustrator, Huo Kai and the design team employed Bessel tools to depict the elegant and light clothing of the characters, capturing the essence of the original mural's line drawing art. The resulting cartoon illustrations, printed in four colors, measure 127x127cm and 63.5x63.5cm, making them ideal for promotional graphic design.
In recognition of this innovative project, the Yongle Palace Myth series was honored with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2020. This accolade celebrates the fusion of traditional art, science, and technology, showcasing strong technical and creative skills that contribute to improving the quality of life.
