Origami Bookshelf: A Unique Blend of Form and Function

Huile Yi introduces the Origami Bookshelf, a revolutionary design inspired by the debate over the relationship between form and function. This innovative bookshelf challenges traditional design principles, offering a solution that seamlessly integrates both functionalism and formalism. The staggered inclined arrangement and special folds create a visually striking and practical storage solution for books of varying heights.

The bookshelf, crafted from MidwestWalnut timberland FAS North American black walnut or Gutchess Timber F&B North American hard maple, features a mortise and tenon joint structure and is finished with German OSMO wax oil. With dimensions of 780*1970*350mm, it offers a dynamic and modern storage solution for contemporary spaces.

Started in June 2018 in Beijing and completed in October 2020 in Henan, the Origami Bookshelf was exhibited in November 2020 at Caochangdi Arts, Beijing. This groundbreaking design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its exceptional creativity and contribution to improving quality of life through innovative design.

The design team, including Huile Yi, Liu Zulong, and Xia Yiting, overcame the challenge of reconciling classical design principles to create an ideal, durable, and visually stunning bookshelf. The result is a product that not only meets functional requirements but also presents a unique and aesthetically pleasing form.
