Cups Kamakura: A Fusion of Cafe and Hotel

Takuji Kamio, a renowned designer, has unveiled his latest creation, Cups Kamakura, a distinctive cafe restaurant and hotel located in front of a beach in Kamakura, Japan. The property, with over 50 years of history, presented a unique design challenge, requiring careful consideration of its regional and environmental influences.

Kamio drew inspiration from the property's ocean-facing location, incorporating water-linked imagery into the design. By skillfully balancing color, sunlight reflection, and material selection, he transformed these inspirations into captivating cafe and hotel spaces.

The preservation and restoration of the 50-year-old building were integral to the project. Kamio and his team meticulously approached the demolition and design process, ensuring that each step aligned with the building's condition and historical significance.

The project, which commenced in January 2020, was completed in July 2020, marking a significant addition to the coastal landscape of Kamakura, Japan. Kamio's meticulous approach to preservation and innovative design has earned Cups Kamakura the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category for 2022.
