Discover the innovative residential house design, completed in September 2020 in Tokyo, Japan, that redefines spatial dynamics and architectural boundaries.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nobuaki Miyashita's Black Monolithic Wall is a custom house plan designed for a parent and child, situated in a quiet residential area of Tokyo. The unique, flagpole-shaped layout of the site inspired the creation of a sculptural approach space integrated with the architecture. The boundary wall, featuring elements such as stairs, a meter box, a mailbox, and lighting, leads visitors to the second-floor entrance, providing a rich spatial experience along the way.
The residential space, consisting of three layers, maximizes interior volume while meeting strict building regulations in Japan. The first floor, partially buried below ground level, houses private spaces including the master bedroom, studio, and a unique bathroom with a jetted bathtub facing a small Japanese-style courtyard garden. The second floor serves as guest rooms and part of the public space, while the third floor features a dining area connected to the void in the center, creating a comfortable living environment.
With a site area of 84.39 m2 and a total floor area of 114.60 m2, the Black Monolithic Wall stands as a testament to innovative design within the constraints of a narrow and elongated plot. The project was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2024, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence.
