Solarbreaker: Redefining Building Facades with Integrated Photovoltaic Technology

Jarosław Markowicz introduces Solarbreaker, a groundbreaking photovoltaic facade shutter system that seamlessly integrates solar panels into building facades, transforming them into energy-producing assets while providing effective sun protection. The innovative design offers a versatile and aesthetically pleasing solution for harnessing solar energy.

Developed in Warsaw, the Solarbreaker project commenced in November 2018 and was successfully implemented in January 2020. The design, awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2020, has garnered recognition for its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovative approach to sustainable architecture.

The Solarbreaker collection includes fences, balustrades, and blinds, all discreetly covered with solar panels, offering a seamless integration of renewable energy sources into traditional building elements.

The Solarbreaker design is based on extruded profiles, allowing for easy installation and material separation for recycling. With dimensions of 1000mm x 120mm x 1000mm, the system offers wide configuration possibilities and is designed for simple assembly, resembling Lego blocks in its folding capabilities.

Connecting profiles and building structures requires minimal tools, and the system is equipped with elements for seamless integration into the home power grid. Each 1m2 module can produce enough energy to power sixteen LED bulbs, with panels tilted at a 45-degree angle for optimal efficiency.

One of the main challenges overcome during the project was to maintain the product's lightness despite the internal electronics and photovoltaic panel, resulting in a design that seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetics.

The Solarbreaker system not only offers an innovative approach to energy production but also addresses the architectural challenge of integrating renewable energy sources into building facades without compromising their visual appeal.
