Vicky Chan, a renowned architect, has unveiled the groundbreaking Interface Waterfront Park, a transformative project along the Hangang River in Seoul, South Korea. The park's design focuses on inclusivity, vertical layering of programs, and consideration of day and night cycles to enhance existing programs. The 5.6km long park and connection along the waterfront are divided into 3 zones with 6 themes, catering to diverse experiences for visitors.
The project, initiated in December 2019, aims to create a holistic development of the Hangang River Pedestrian Network, ensuring that people of all abilities can access and enjoy the waterfront. The design team's meticulous site analysis identified the lack of lighting, signage, and physical barriers for people with special needs as critical issues to address. The INTERFACE on pedestrian network and connection bases serve to provide easier access for people with different needs, fostering equal enjoyment of the Hangang River for everyone.
Utilizing innovative technology, the design incorporates 9 connection bases with ramps and elevators to connect multiple levels, creating elevated platforms and shaded spaces for various activities. The sensitive intervention minimizes impact to existing trees, footpaths, and surrounding residents, while landscape, lighting, and signage ideas are designed to elevate inclusivity to current standards, ensuring sustainable, safe, vibrant, and memorable experiences for all visitors.
