Walk DVRC Street Basket, a pedestrianization plan in downtown Hong Kong, transforms 1 km of Des Voeux Road Central into a sustainable and walkable park.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Vicky Chan, a renowned architect, and his design team have created the innovative Walk DVRC Street Basket, inspired by the vibrant food culture of Hong Kong. This mobile landscape serves as a multifunctional pavilion, providing seating, greenery, cellphone charging, and shading during the day, and transforming into an iconic communal space at night.
The project's unique feature lies in its mobility, allowing the pedestrianized zone to convert from a park back into a road in less than 5 minutes. The design, measuring 4m by 4m in plan with a 3m tall structure, incorporates wheels and a battery for easy mobility and electricity.
Installed within hours of late-night road closures, the Street Basket is designed to fit inside a truck and can be swiftly deployed, offering a seamless transition between pedestrianized and vehicular zones. The project, which began in November 2018 and concluded in November 2019, addresses the need for more greenery, seating, and shading, as identified through extensive street surveys and research.
Despite challenges such as the lack of access to electricity and water, the design team successfully implemented sustainable solutions, including mobile batteries with solar panels and rainwater collection systems, reducing construction costs and promoting sustainable design practices.
Walk DVRC Street Basket has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, highlighting its innovative approach to urban space transformation and sustainability. The project is a testament to Vicky Chan's commitment to creating holistic architecture that enhances the way people live, work, and interact with their environment.
