Architect Vicky Chan's OneSky Global Centre provides free child services for at-risk families in Hong Kong

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PC Lee OneSky Global Centre

Architect Vicky Chan has unveiled the PC Lee OneSky Global Centre, a 16,000 sf children's center providing free child services for at-risk families in Hong Kong's poorest district, Sham Shui Po. The center aims to change the neighborhood, which has the least public facilities per child in Hong Kong, by providing relational spaces to connect parents, teachers, and children. The project, which started in April 2018 and finished in December 2020, is within walking distance of public housing estates and subdivided flats, allowing the NGO to reach at-risk families with less social connections.

Besides its colorful art wall near the entrance, the center features warm materials and striking colors to create a welcoming exterior with communal functions. The three-story building is connected through a grand stair and two elevators. The ground floor is a 5m tall communal space with play structures and wall arts, while the first floor is a licensed childcare center for children 0 to 3, and the second floor is a flexible playroom for children 3 to 6, along with an office and training center for parenting and teaching skills.

The project faced challenges in adapting to old buildings with physical constraints, such as water leakage and undocumented structures from the previous owner. However, the design solutions evolved around these constraints while staying true to the teaching methodology. The center's design adapts the philosophy of OneSky teaching, training positive parenting techniques, and showing more affection towards children. The project provides relational spaces to connect parents, teachers, and children, and includes a training center that provides tips on parenting and teaching skills.
