Float: Illuminating the Concept of Slow Design

Guangpeng Yue introduces Float, a maglev "floating" light designed to bring a sense of mindfulness and tranquility to users. Inspired by the "Zen" philosophy and the concept of "slow design," Float combines static and rotational elements to create a serene atmosphere, allowing users to slow down and appreciate the beauty of life.

Float is not just a lamp; it's an experience. The interactive magnetic suspension knob allows users to initiate a unique mental flow, promoting concentration and a meditative state. Crafted from green materials and designed with simplicity in mind, Float embodies the essence of Zen and a return to nature.

Utilizing maglev technology and durable materials such as polypropylene, aluminum, and white oak, Float stands as a testament to innovation and thoughtful design. With three different lamp sizes, each with its own specifications, Float offers a versatile lighting solution that seamlessly integrates into any space.

The Float lamp operates through a clever interaction with magnetic levitation technology, allowing users to switch between warm and cold light by rotating the suspended object. This not only provides functional lighting but also creates a conducive atmosphere for focused activities such as studying or meditation.

The project, initiated in July 2021 at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China, was completed in October 2021. Through extensive research and creative problem-solving, the design team overcame challenges related to stability and durability, resulting in the creation of an award-winning product.

Guangpeng Yue, along with the dedicated design team, has brought to life a product that goes beyond mere illumination. Float is a testament to the power of design to evoke emotion, promote mindfulness, and enhance the user experience.
