Compact Tower by sxdesign

Beijing-based design studio sxdesign introduces Compact Tower, an innovative air purifier and sterilizer aimed at improving air quality in developing regions. Inspired by the need for powerful, affordable, and compact air purification solutions, the design team leveraged computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology to optimize the air duct structure systematically, resulting in a product that is both efficient and space-saving.

Credit to the CFD tests over 1000 times, the designers created a new centrifugal fan that significantly reduces the air duct volume while maintaining performance, and integrates UV disinfection lamps compactly. The minimalist design, with a distinctive hemisphere on the top edge, not only shapes the control panel and indicator but also provides novelty through its asymmetry, expressing the working principle of the product.

Measuring just 240mm in diameter and 470mm in height, Compact Tower utilizes ABS injection molding for the white body with a grey top, along with transparent black acrylic for the interactive panel and lampshade. The UVC disinfection lamp emits 280nm violet light, effectively purifying the air.

Compact Tower is capable of circulating 100L of fresh and healthy air per minute, providing a complete air change 3.65 times per hour in a 40 square meters room, making it suitable for the challenging living conditions in developing regions.

The project commenced in January 2021 in Beijing and concluded in November 2021 in Shenzhen. The design team overcame numerous challenges, including compressing the volume of the structure to meet performance requirements while balancing simplicity and novelty in the product's appearance.

sxdesign's Compact Tower was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Products category in 2022, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and positive impact on users' lives.
