Retrofit Project in Gramado Showcases Integration of Contemporary and Vernacular Architecture

Torres Arquitetos presents the 249 Design Hotel, a retrofit project located in the picturesque city of Gramado, Brazil. Inspired by the German vernacular architecture prevalent in the region, this project seamlessly integrates contemporary design with the existing architectural style, creating a harmonious and respectful dialogue with the city's identity. The project aimed to unite the contemporary and the existing through materiality and respect for the local characteristics.

The 249 Design Hotel stands out for its unique approach to materiality, integrating steel, wood, and stone to create a cohesive and visually striking exterior. The project's expansion and alteration of the existing inn resulted in a total area of 1106m² and 31 suites, while maintaining the city's architectural identity. The use of universal and pure materials successfully connects historical points, offering a warm and comfortable environment for guests.

Constructed with a focus on integrating internal and external areas, the hotel features a striking triple-height glass and steel frame marking the foyer, connecting the common areas and new suites. The visual connection of distinct building blocks is achieved through consistent materiality and a shared roof design, paying homage to the existing building while embracing contemporary elements.

The 249 Design Hotel is a testament to the successful integration of contemporary architecture into a historically rich location, offering guests a unique and immersive experience that reflects the essence of Gramado.
