Wenkai Xue's Luf Seedling Trays

Wenkai Xue presents Luf, a groundbreaking solution for sustainable seedling trays, inspired by China's rural revitalization strategy. The trays are made from loofah and hot-pressed glutinous rice glue, offering a biodegradable alternative to plastic trays, promoting a circular design model.

The innovative trays are designed for efficient transportation, with a single person able to carry more than five trays at a time. Once the seedlings mature, they can be transplanted into the soil, where the trays degrade into nutrients, supporting the natural growth cycle.

The production process involves a meticulous blend of loofah fiber, bio-based green adhesive, and curing agents, resulting in a durable and eco-friendly product. The design specifications include specific dimensions and hole configurations to accommodate various types of vegetable seedlings.

Wenkai Xue's team, including Du Heli, Jia Zhuohang, and Xue Bomu, meticulously researched and overcame challenges to integrate agricultural waste into functional and sustainable design, aligning with the principles of the rural revitalization strategy. The project, initiated in May 2022 and completed in January 2023 at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, exemplifies a forward-looking approach to addressing agricultural and environmental concerns.

Wenkai Xue's Luf Seedling Trays have been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2023, underscoring the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to sustainable principles. This accolade further highlights the significant impact of Luf in promoting sustainable practices within the agricultural industry.
